Abstract
Abstract: The aim of this chapter is to describe the Western harp from the points of view of mechanical engineering and acoustics, and how it has evolved into its current form. Section 9.2 notes the earliest recorded beginnings, and sketches the route by which we have arrived at the modern instrument. The structure is explained, including how the instrument is played. The two major acoustical components of the harp, the strings and the soundboard/soundbox system, their contributions to the sound of the harp, and how they have evolved into their present state, are considered in more detail in Sects. 9.3 and 9.4. Section 9.5 looks at the whole instrument and the sound it produces.
